Check with Harutiun (( 5-20-38) at the Khoren Ter Harutian Sculpture Museum, on Araratian Poghots opposite the Cathedral Complex to arrange homestays w/dinner and breakfast for US$10-20. Also check with Khachik at Echmiadzin Shop (( 5-20-84 at the shop, 5-64-59 at home) for the same. Near Guyaneh Mrs. Aghumian (( 5-65-83), Sovetakan Banaki 38, lives in one of the red-tiled cottages opposite Guyaneh. She has two spare beds upstairs, and provides bed, dinner and breakfast for US$15 per person, US$10 for bed only. Very friendly family who has hosted guests before. Near H'raparak Surik (( 5-73-04), Atarbekian 98, has two beds in a single room available for lodgers. US$10 bed only, US$15 includes dinner and breakfast. Near Shoghakat/Hripsimeh The area above Shoghakat and Hripsimeh Vanks, between Nalbandian, Spendarian and Hoktemberian Poghots, has some of the nicest traditional homes in Echmiadzin. Homes are built around central courtyards with large porches or balconies overlooking the gardens. Mrs. Hasmik Azatian (( 4-16-30), Nalbandian Arachin Nerpansk 5a (1st Cul de Sac off of Nalbandian, house 5a). The house is on the right as you turn the corner into the cul de sac., has a pleasant little home with lace curtains on the window and a large porch in back overlooking her garden. She has two beds, and charges US$15 for bed, a huge dinner of dolma, pilaf and village yogurt, bedtime herbal tea with fruit and dessert, and a breakfast with eggs, cheese and bread. A treat. Three other homes on Nalbandian Poghots are #68, #70 and #73. Spaces vary from spare rooms to an entire home, from US$10-25 per person, with meals. Call or see David at Van Motel (( 4-80-24). South of Mashtots Poghots Andranik Azatian and Anzhik Petrossian (( 5-55-03), Nalbandian Poghots 45, have a large hostel-style building about 500 meters south of Echmiadzin on Manukian Poghots 1, with 12 rooms, shared bath, and a huge walled-in garden. The rooms are still being furnished, but this is an excellent option for small groups with their own bed rolls. US$7 per person, meals extra. Suro (( 4-39-83) at Kardjikian Arachin Nerpansk #4 (1st cul de sac off of Karjikian, house # 4) has a private house with a spare room for two lodgers. US$15 per lodger includes meals. Next to the Ring Café is Julieta Babaian (( 5-78-29), Mashtots Poghots 48 apt. 20, who has a spare room with two beds to let for single sex or married lodgers only. Dinner and breakfast includes for US$15 per person. Nora Sarkissian (( 5-24-63), Djerzhinsky Poghots 82b, has a spacious and clean room for US$10, with dinner and breakfast US$15.

Near Echmiadzin Village Homes In Vacheh, Aratashen And Taronik

Homes are located on the Cradle of Civilization Trail in Ararat Valley, leading to Metsamor Excavation Site. Offer rooms in their homes for very cheap prices. You get a bed, share meals with the family, and use of the outdoor facilities. For those who want real contact with local people, on a shoe-string budget. Vacheh: (Mokhrablur excavation) On the Road from Echmiadzin to Markara (take Echmiadzin-Markara or Echmiadzin-Taronik bus/private van at Echmiadzin bus station) Vacheh is a good stop for those exploring the Metsamor excavation region and Echmiadzin. It's only 9.7 kilometers from Echmiadzin city center. Ask at Vladik Ghavalian’s (From Markara highway, right 1 kilometer into Vacheh. 300 meters beyond you will see a "Camel" kiosk in front of a red stone cultural center, turn R. Go past the school and WW II monument to where the road stops at a "T" intersection. Turn R. Vladik’s house is the 4th on the left, #46, Shirvanzadeh St.) for overnight stays at homes in the village ($10-15 per bed with three meals). Aratashen: (Adablur excavation) Located 7.7 kilometers from Vacheh on Vacheh-Taronik Road (Echmiadzin-Taronik bus/private van). Vartan Terterian can arrange for meals or an overnight stay in a village house ($10-12 per night, includes three meals). The houses we saw were very pretty, they reminded us of stone cottages in the West of Ireland. The Kasakh River makes for some very nice walking, and the view of Ararat can’t be beat. Fresh cheese, wine and bread--it’s all here. Taronik: (Metsamor excavation/museum) Located 2.4 kilometers from Aratashen on the Aratashen-Taronik Road (Echmiadzin-Taronik bus/private van). Taronik is one of the larger villages in the area, and the excavation workers live there. They can point you in the right direction for bed and hearth in the village ($10-12 per night, includes three meals). Ask at the Metsamor museum (1.4 kilometers from edge of village) for recommended home.
