Paradise Found

(update 2003)

Southern Armenia is the most majestic, awe-inspiring part of Armenia. Little visited by tourists due mostly to the time it takes to get there (8 hours to Kapan from Yerevan), the topography flows from deep rock canyons with lone pine trees to rolling alpine hills eventually plunging into native hard wood forests that blanket the towering mountain ranges. The oldest astral observatory uncovered lies by Sissian, and prehistoric rock carvings cover mountain top refuges.

The area teems with wildlife: the last wild herds of native goats, mountain lions and endangered bird species makes this the most memorable place in the country. Lodging is a most pleasant surprise, too, the best lodging venues chock-a-block inside forests and atop mountain hills.
